our roots

“The country in which Shelbyville is situated is one of the most favored regions on the American Continent. The richness of the soil, the productiveness of its magnificent farms, its abundance of the fine water courses, and above all the enterprise, thrift and industry of its people, all conspire to make Shelby a county equaled by few and surpassed by none other in the world.”

THE SHELBY DEMOCRAT - VOL. 1 NO. 37. FEB 13, 1879

Shelby County has a long history of hardworking people, innovative industry, and storied craftsmanship. From the first railroad in the state of Indiana being built right here in Shelbyville to the fine furniture shops that once called Shelbyville home, there has always been pride in progress. Quality craftsmanship was one of the core components that helped establish Shelbyville as the pearl of Indiana in 1821.

It was the enterprise, thrift, and industry of its people that made this a reality.

Once a thriving community and cultural hub, Shelbyville hit hard times after a series of major events: the flood of 1913, The City Hall fire of 1928, quickly followed by the great depression. This city, once known as “The Furniture Capital of the Midwest,” began losing its identity as the furniture industry began to shutter following the great depression.

Now, 200 years after its establishment, Shelbyville is experiencing a rebirth. While the city has begun to renovate portions of Shelbyville, these plans are lacking one major component... the people.

While our desire is to see historical buildings renovated, neighborhoods rebuilt, and new amenities added to the city, this alone will not provide hope. Shelbyville was once the pearl of Indiana and our goal is to see this community’s reputation restored as a place people are proud to call home. As Shelbyville sees a physical restoration it’s just as imperative that we restore the lives of those who call this place home.

Generational cycles of poverty, addiction, and the job skills gap have had a tremendous effect on our community, and they need to be addressed.

The Shelby Supply Company will use the very things that established this community: hard work, industry, and craftsmanship to empower individuals with negative past life experiences. Through the production and sales of furniture we’ll address individual responsibility, life skills, and job skills training that will build a foundation for generations to come. We believe education, encouragement, discipleship and God’s power to transform a heart are essential components for success.

Our products made of wood, leather, and metal represent raw materials which have been transformed into vessels of usefulness and beauty - just like the individuals who crafted them.
